This one is in focus!
Sorry about the camera shake! (Any idea on how to get rid of it?!?)

Still at Christchurch South intermediate where we saw a miniature mountain of sand 8 inches high. It had just spontaneously burst from the earth during our 6.3 earthquake two hours before.
And two hours after the quake, the water was still running as if someone had left a tap on!

In other places a friend told me that the water and sand were expelled from the earth violently like a geyser.

It created a combination of potholes and silt all over the city making the roads almost impossible to navigate.

  • I remembering coming to South to look for my friends little brother after escaping town, It was defiantly devastating !

  • @XxBornThisWay3012 It was almost like visiting a little volcano farm! Manhire street (which runs off the back of the playing fields) was even worse. Every driveway seemed to be oozing with sand volcanoes. I'm glad I took the video -- already the memories are fading.

  • personally i find this amazing- bottle some of that sand up- theres a family story if there ever was one

  • @salvadory That's a very good point, Salvadory. Right now everyone considers it just dreck, but give it a couple of years and it will be a great souvenir! I am definitely going to take up your advice! :)

  • Pole Shift !!!!!!!!!!

  • @truthseekernz Thanks for explaining that, truthseekernz. I tried to write a response for rollsthepaul, but it looks like it didn't upload. :(

When I first heard about liquefaction, it sounded rather like quicksand. But at least in Christchurch in September and February, the problem was more the opposite: rather than solid objects sinking, light objects (like storm water pipes) became buoyant and pushed towards the surface. Manhole covers were bulging up all over the place!

  • @rollsthepaul The earthquake on Feb 22nd caused "liquifaction". Sandy soils with high water content basically turning to flowing mud. In this case, the flow has no decline to flow down...so the pressure is pushing the sand upward at a weak point....It would be quite wet. It could be very risky being close to one of these as the soil can liquify at any point....and if you're standing there that could be a big problem for you. Vehicles sink in...and are held fast when shaking stops.

  • Has any sand volcano, turned into something else? Something is pushing the sand up.
