The Dance of Death. Music: Ioculatores - Media vita in morte sumus

Death visits various people and speaks a few lines before their passing.

As the cd-pamphlet does not have the text for this song, some lines were acoustically unclear. If anyone learned in late medieval German wants to take a crack at the translation, feel free to help :)

1st: To the powerful king
"Oh great King, now art thou the pauper
equal. God hath indeed decreed, in the
earth shall return to ashes ye."

2nd: To the canon

"Proud canon, thou possess land and chattel no more.
Sweet words cannot help thee, come forth!"

3rd: Translation difficulties :D

4th: To the pious
"You, brother, thou hast kept God in thy
heart! In God's service hast thou been devout.
Thou hast denied sin and thyself to God's honor.
These deeds guarantee thy meed."

5th: To the carpenter and the usurer
"Carpenter, and usurer too, I bid you, join these ranks! Late into the night ye toil, and do forget the soul. So continue you this way until the day, your life fading, bitter death bids you."

6th: To the Master of Paris
"Oh, great master of Paris! We shall honor you only so long. Although thou believe thou have yet many years, come with me now, take thy place in these ranks!

To mankind
"Come ye, join this dance! I stand alone, yet do I overcome you all! I shall come, you must die! Be ye friends of God, so shall it be your good, be ye not, than travel you shall, in the floods of hell!"

  • love the sound. looking music for a gothic wedding.

  • @BlueVelvet043 the song sounds great, but please, not during a wedding. That would be entirely inappropriate!

    Apocalipse 21:4

  • I seem to recognize the medieval plain chant dies irae as the basis of the viol playing.

    Am I correct in this?

I did not know that they based music on this chant back in the middle ages, (though of course Liszt Rachmaninov and a host of other romantics did in the 19-20th centuries). However it stands to reason, for basing works on pre existing plain chant is where western tonal harmony arose from

  • @WujekPunisher LOL, I would, if you knew your death steps :)
