The Cygnus Enigma examines the link between the archaeological treasurehouse that is Newgrange, the myths which relate to that eminent place, and other interesting factors which together form a fascinating ancient mystery. It is revealed for the first time how the various elements of the Cygnus story formed an astronomical masterplan in ancient times, and how, quite possibly, the Stone Age people were able to see the precession of the equinoxes.

In our investigation, we examined the relationship between the astronomical constructs of Newgrange and Fourknocks, the Whooper Swan which winters at Newgrange, the constellation Cygnus and the numerous myths and stories about Newgrange which relate to swans.

The Cygnus Enigma is fully documented in our book, Island of the Setting Sun - In Search of Ireland's Ancient Astronomers

  • Excellent -I only object that one narrator pretends not to know who built Newgrange while the other tells us what is well recorded, that the Danaan built it.

  • Indeed. Something the Continuity Editor didn't catch! Well spotted.

  • Wow, how thin I was back then. I've put on nearly four stone since then!

  • @soar1111 "Angus was a chief of the Tuatha Dé Danaan, an other worldly race and he was the owner and keeper of Brú na Bóinne, Newgrange here behind us"... hers was a statement of fact, his are statements of opinion and suggestion! as he states, they are based on handed down stories and myths from our ancient past. Also by saying Angus was the owner and keeper doesn't necessarily mean the Tuatha Dé Danaan built it in the first place... No overlap here, in my opinion Scannán go hiontach!!

  • @shelaghmckenna if you listen to what she said - "its not known who built this tomb" - that's true we don't really know, and he said "the Cygnus enigma examines the link between some of the stories and myths which come down to us from ancient times about this place, and the heavens above our heads, and suggest in ancient times an astronomical master plan was put in place"..... later on... "one of the most fascinating myths about Newgrange is the romantic tale of Angus and Cahir"

  • @JordoF6 Aliens didn't built New Grange stop dumbing down Humans.

  • You could imagine the first contact between the irish tribes and aliens.

  • @shelaghmckenna ha well... the danaan, aka the tuatha da danaan, are the people under the waves, the faery folk, like the elves from middle earth!

  • @frankeeirish04 actually no it wasnt druids as they came with the gaels, the people who built this were beaker builders not celts

  • Wombs not tombs

  • @sb81282 Yes it was the druids!! Christianity arrived way after!!!!!! Newgrange was built thousands of years before monks!!!

  • @TheHyperboreanzenith Possibly... I've been enjoying looking at the swan for the last couple of nights, its been so clear.. amazing that its a constelation credited to ptolmy(?) not sure i spelt that right... in the second century when there are monuments dating to 3000BC here that obviously show the people knew about it, it goes some way to maybe explaining the spirals on newgrange, maybe they represent the swan spiraling in the sky from summer to winter... amazing stuff anyway lads.

  • @TheHyperboreanzenith monks? Should it be Druids?
