"The Angel" is the 4th of 12 pieces from the suite "Aus Andersens Marchen", Op. 30, subtitled "A Musical Picture Book" by the Russian/Ukranian composer Serge Bortkiewicz. Each piece in the suite is based in some way on a fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen. This fourth piece presents an angelic melody singing over a flowing accompaniment to represent a Heavenly Angel who takes a dead child on a journey to his favorite places before taking the child up to heaven to be greeted by a heavenly choir of angels as he is granted his own wings.
I found this lovely suite about 12 years ago while rummaging through some old sheet music at a music store in Munich. Although my copy is yellowed and aged, I am pleased to say this suite is still in print. The pieces in it are all lovely in their own way, and are fun to play. Hopefully my humble recordings will inspire others to explore this unjustly neglected music.
The 12 movements are:
1. Die Prinzessin auf dr Erbse (The Princess and the Pea)
2. Die Glocke (The Bell)
3. Der standhafte Zinnsoldat (The Hardy Tin Soldier)
4. Der Engel (The Angel)
5. Die Blumen der kelinen Ida (Little Ida's Flowers)
6. Die Nachtigall (The Nightingale)
7. Es ist ganz gewiss (It is Quite Certian)
8. Das Kind im Grabe (The Child in the Grave)
9. Der Schmetterling (The Butterfly)
10. Das hassliche junge Entelein (The Ugly Duckling)
11. Goldschatz (The Golden Treasure)
12. Das eherne Schwein (The Metal Pig)
