ahh. THOSE.. are reef point and reef lines on the main sail They are to let you have a smaller sail. You lower the main sail, and tie those ropes (reef lines) around the boom to make the main sail smaller. That is what you do in heavy winds when you can't just stop sailing because you are far from harbor.

ahhh... those are 'tell tales" they show how the wind is behaving over that spot on the sail. Because the sail is translucent, you can often see the one on the other side of the sail, too, so you know if the wind is smooth over both sides of the sail. or smooth on one side and rough on the other. The sail sometimes acts like a vertical wing.

The boat is a 1964 Cal 28 and VENUS III was her original name. I remember the delivery. Yes Will I do....I remember Franja bouncing the stick on the ground...I was almost 2 years old!
