You do not need a gun to kill a lot of people. Do a search on youtube put this in search (Arrest in Tokyo Mass Stabbing). He stabbed 17 people in just a couple minuets if he knew where to stab all would have bleed to death in two minuets. A school hall between class think of how many he could have stabbed.

The state cannot protect you from a first time offense from a felon. It can only protect you from a second time offense by locking up a felon and throwing away the key, or if the offense is bad enough, by terminating the offender. I wish that we lived in a world where everyone followed the rules, and the government could keep law and order on its own. That however is not a reality we currently live in, and crime must be dealt with as a whole rather than gun crime, or rape or robbery.

Take the UK as a test case for your theory. Crime across the board has increased, while on average firearm crime has not particularly been affected. It is to the point where they are talking about confiscating kitchen knives.

Self defense, and self preservation is a right, and RESPONSIBILITY of all people. There are people in the world who will hurt or kill others to get what they want. Police response times are larger than the time it takes to commit a crime. We never know when a crime will occur. Weapons are equalizers that allow us to compensate for size and strength.
