@emencz Pharoah's heart was already hard, as clearly shown by his terroristic cruelty to the Hebrew slaves. Pharoah ordered such cruelty as newborn Hebrew babies being bricked up in walls as the walls were being built, their very own parents forced to do it. So it wasn't actually a punishment from God - when we make our choices we make them of our own free will and God does not abrogate that. God sends his angels to help us along the way we have chosen, for good or evil. Middah Kneged Middah.

@RodentPrincess the "hardening of his heart" was part of Pharoa's punishment, measure for measure his having made himself insensitive to the plight of the Hebrew slaves.

I love Pesach, but the part that always bothered me was that G-d "hardened the heart" of Pharoh himself :(
