Objects change the spaces in which they inhabit. They can show you new ways of looking at the familiar. With that in mind I set out with a camera and a Huichol Gourd Bowl (created by members of the Huichol tribes around Yelapa Mexico, while tranced out on peyote - this one features the "magical deer" who brings spiritual guidance and inspiration).
In this case the bowl seemed to draw me to the wild living things hiding in my very industrial Chicago neighborhood. Prominent was a pigeon who seemed to have been hit by a car. When I noticed that the bird was still alive I picked him up and hid him among some decorative plants in front of a high rise. While I waited for another caring soul to call animal control, I sat with him, watching as he drifted in and out of consciousness.
This video is a simple expression of that experience and how this bowl and the injured pigeon, so warm in my hands, standing in between life and death, deeply affected me.
I asked this object to show me something and I got more than I expected.
Fascinating
