Veronique Gens
Les Arts Florissants
William Christie

VENUS
Fairest isle, all isles excelling,
Seat of pleasure and of love;
Venus here will choose her dwelling,
And forsake her Cyprian grove.
Cupid from his fav'rite nation,
Care and envy will remove;
Jealousy that poisons passion,
And despair that dies for love.
Gentle murmurs, sweet complaining,
Sighs that blow the fire of love;
Soft repulses, Kind disdaining,
Shall be all the pains you prove.
Ev'ry swain shall pay his duty,
Grateful ev'ry nymph shall prove;
And as these excel in beauty,
Those shall be renown'd for love.

  • The original version is much faster. nevertheless, i like Ms. Gens's interpretation. She sings the piece quite well. Purcell would be proud.

  • Simply beautiful!!!!

  • Slow tempo is just sublime.Purcell's very greatest music.

  • Fairest Isle

    by John Dryden (1631-1700)

    Schönstes Eiland, hoch gepriesen,

    aller Lust und Liebe Hort,

    Venus selbst wird dich erkiesen,

    zieht von Zyperns Hainen fort.

    Cupido wird dich entheben

    aller Sorge, allem Neid,

    allen Argwohns bösem Streben,

    hoffnungslosem Liebesleid.

  • @MaiseDoat If I were to be praised by someone who loved me, I would be grateful to have it done slowly, lingeringly, and lovingly. This is what we experience here; eternity in 4 minutes, 44 seconds.

  • @elias12186 If it´s none of our business then you shouldn´t talk about it.

  • Certainly one of my very favorite pieces of music of all time.

  • @ Solangemassa Hi, you have Libretto here:

    I hope you enjoy.

  • Décidément trop lent - dommage pour la merveilleuse Véronique Ges !

  • Très bel air chanté par une très belle voix...Si seulement toutes nos chanteuses baroquisantes françaises pouvaient atteindre ce niveau ce serait le bonheur.
