Having trouble posting comments & additions to the video so I'm leaving some comments here. Hopefully you guys get this.

@hazardousranger30 Not sure where I slowed down? I had the fastest time in T1 at nationals in Kelowna Canada summer 2011, not bragging just saying that it's fast. http://tinyurl.com/83f39xz search for Brendan Robertson.

@ErwinvanderWerve Putting on the shoes in T1 V.S. on the bike can be a race day call. If you're running across gravel to the mount line put shoes on first to avoid being cut up. If you run across grass or pavement to mount, leave shoes on bike. Also I am biking right away as I peddle with my feet on top of the shoes.
You will always run faster barefoot to the mount line than in bike shoes (except maybe on gravel).

@BungaMelatti I am almost sprinting when I hop on my bike. I don't do the large leg swing over the back that you are talking about as it is dangerous and doesn't give you the push to get going as well as this. If you are talking about going over the front it's not as dangerous, but you don't get the push. You will end up on youtube one day as the beginner who fell over trying your move.

I train 12 days a week with a previous international triathlete as my coach.

  • I have my bike suspended upside down then I do a gainer and flip the whole bike back around in one sweeping motion. In this manner I am able to land both feet in my shoes at the same time with no slow down. It took me a while to master, but two years, three broken collar bones, some minor skull fractures, and a ruptured spleen later, I really feel it has been worth it since it has knocked an average of 0.07 seconds off my transition time.

  • @holdtheonionsplease The technique you are describing is known as the Russian Lotus. While it is highly dangerous and only for experienced riders it is a much more efficient way of transitioning to the bike. It was invented by Alexander Reisenkoff in the late 1800's while trying to escape on a bike after robbing a bank.

  • If you have one strip on your shoe you can put you can put your second foot direct in the shoe instead put the feet on the shoe

I can do this transition a lot faster and even without rubber bands

  • Why don't you wear socks, you put them on for the run so why not put them on earlier for the bike?

  • i feel like you would lose more time doing this because you slow down to keep the bike balanced while doing this while you should be going relatively fast..it is a race afterall

  • @TriGuyBrendan The focus during mounting should be on landing your ass on the saddle and not starting of with one foot on a pedal. The key is to jump on the bike from running to have adequate start speed not to fall over. This requires landing on the inside upper leg to save your tender parts ;). So: jump on, place both feet on shoes fixed with the elastics bands and then pedal >30kph feet on top of shoes. Elastics DO NOT help during putting on your shoes, that's a common misconception.

  • Ehmmm @ErwinvanderWerve, you swim with shoes on? Of course bare foot running :)

@triatleethans it's better to get up to speed first, feet on top of the shoes and only start putting them on when >30 kph. Otherwise might as well put them on during transition.

  • nice, but If you already have your shoes on you can start biking right away. So I guess most advantage would be from running barefoot?

  • great trick!
