This piece is in the collection of Nature in Art, Gloucester. Terry has exhibited his sculptures all over the world. Recent commissions have included a life-size concrete Rhino at the gates of Nairobi National Park and a bronze memorial at the spot where several tons of ivory tusks were symbolically burnt by President Moi.Terry Mathews, Kenyan, born 1931. Brought up in Uganda, Mathews was a keen naturalist from an early age, particularly of the birds and reptiles around Lake Victoria. Returning to East Africa after being educated in England, he became one of the best known hunters in Kenya, eventually starting his own firm, Mathews Safaris. When he lost the sight of his lead eye, he turned his sculpture hobby into his fulltime occupation. He has since gained a well deserved international reputation for his sculptures of African wildlife, not just big game and antelope but birds and fish as well. He is now a keen wildlife conservationist.
