I hung around with some of the pros who played on the tour in the late 70s.

They had decided to try to make the game more appealing for television in hopes of generating more money for the pros on tour.

9 ball was picked for the force used on the break, the luck factor, and the generally more difficult shot making and position.

Straight pool which had a much smaller luck factor also had some not too interesting safety play, at least for an unknowing television audience.

  • @dv713 Interesting how in the sixties, in The Hustler, the game was straight pool, and in the eighties in The Color of Money, the game had turned into nine-ball.

Willie taught Newman to shoot pool for this movie. They spent time in the basement of a girls school so Newman could learn the game.

Willie once ran 13 racks of 9 ball when challenged by a 9 ball money player when Willie was in his prime, this was at 50 a rack, quite a sum in those days.

He disliked 9 ball because of the luck factor but that did not mean he could not play it. A true legend in his sport.

  • holy fuck, surely this is one of the greatest scenes ever?
