K9 Friends is a rescue and re-homing centre for stray and abandoned dogs.
K9 friends began in 1989 when a group of ladies got together to walk their dogs and began their own dog club. As they became well known people started calling them with regards to stray and abused dogs they were seeing around the streets of Dubai. With a mobile phone and the use of Foster homes K9 friends began.
In 2000 the stray dog population had grown to such an extent there was no longer space to house all the needy dogs in foster homes. K9 Friends rented a warehouse in Al Quoz and for the next 8 years ran a basic shelter from the site.
When K9 friends was a victim of massive rent hikes and eventually given an eviction notice on the premises they inhabited a massive publicity campaign began. Luckily the Dubai Government heard of the K9 Friends plight and in 2008 granted them land and buildings for their new purpose-built shelter.
The new K9 Friends shelter opened its doors to the public in October 2009 and they are now privileged to own one of the best animal care facilities in the Middle East.
K9 Friends is run entirely by volunteers and is a completely non-profit organisation. All the money to run the shelter comes from fund raising which is done by the volunteers. Our main income involves: Garage and book sales, selling merchandise, sponsorship of a dog and sponsorship of kennel schemes as well as donations given by the public. It is a daily struggle for K9 Friends to raise enough money to keep this wonderful facility running.
The office is the main hub of K9 Friends. We receive over 30 calls a day from people regarding dogs. Sadly it remains a sad statistic that most of our calls are still about dogs needing a new place to stay whether they have been abandoned, abused or are simply not wanted any more.
K9 Friends can hold 110 dogs comfortably and the shelter is always full.
When we have space and a dog is brought in, it is registered with a name and number. The dog is then bathed and treated for fleas, ticks and worms. It will then receive a check up from the vet and will be vaccinated and micro-chipped. As soon as possible, every dog over the age of six months is neutered.
K9 Friends actively discourages breeding as there are already far too many abandoned and unwanted dogs in this world. We are very proud that none of our dogs can reproduce and we believe we are helping to control the dog population.
All of our dogs are well cared for. They are handled every day by our dedicated volunteers and we have an excellent socialization program for the dogs and pups in our care.
K9 Friends always need new volunteers, not just for working in the kennels but to help us with marketing and fundraising. Without dedicated volunteers K9 Friends would not survive and the stray and abandoned dogs of the UAE would face a very uncertain future.
