06/15/2009 - Mayor Kevin C. Foy accepted the first place City Livability Award on behalf of the Town of Chapel Hill during the 2009 Mayors' City Livability Awards Program. More than 200 cities from around the country were considered for the award, based on three criteria: mayoral leadership, creativity and innovation, and broad impact on the quality of life for residents. Sponsored by Waste Management, Inc., and the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the City Livability Award Program recognizes mayors for exemplary leadership in developing and implementing programs that improve the quality of life in their cities.

  • Wow, why do so many people hate Chapel Hill, I love it! It has some great schools, and my brother rides the bus everywhere

  • It doesn't have a transit sys. like SF and Chicago cause it is a small community. Chicago is the 3rd largest city in the US. 2.7 mil people compared to 57000. The buses run during times that most students and workers are going and coming. Why would CH offer bus service to take you shopping outside of CH. Encourage them to bring in business and you won't have to leave. The system is free and that isn't likely to change. Its not a community without cars just a community with other options.

  • I'm North Carolinian. We're not all rednecks. I hate that steorotype.

Preach on, sister! This public transit system is the biggest joke. I've had RURAL towns in FRANCE run better systems than here. The schedules are incredibly stupid, the routes are inconvenient and hard to understand, and the signs are completely inconsistent. The people who praise this system have never left this tiny city and seen what a REAL metro system can do. I'd rather pay and have it work too.

  • The buses do not run with any frequency on Saturday and on Sunday there is no significant bus service. Not even the Triangle buses run on Sunday. Why are there so few buses after 830 pm on weekdays? Not all the routes are logical; we need buses that go to the major shopping centers in Durham and Raleigh especially on the weekends.

If you don't like it,move to Chicago or San Francisco.

  • yeah the free buses in CH are nice for sure...but don't expect them to take you home past 8, and don't expect them to be running anything close to on time. Some of the routes are a bit weird too. It's great in theory, but they just need to rework some of the logistics of the whole operation. I'm sure it can be done, since the Triangle is supposedly America's "smartest" region.

  • @chellycat14 Thank you so much for providing all the information.
