ok.. scientific correctly explaination:
through the nuclear mutation and the evolution/devolution in several millions of years the sense for coldness changed so much that these people are resistent to cold materials on about 0*C.^^

For my personal opinion, the artist Toby Bluth (brother of Don Bluth) borrows a lot of artistic style from Wendy Pini and Richard Pini (creators and primary artists on the ELFQUEST comicbook series).
