A lead that swapped almost too many times to count! Perhpas Didier was trying and Gilles wasn't, if you were to believe what Gilles said... The tragedies that soon followed these two will leave the real story as a mystery, but what it wasn't was a staged show by the two Ferrari drivers.

  • I got a sweet deal for the FIA.

Bring back Imola in exchange for all the "Tilkedroms" on the calendar.

  • to blame Pironi for Villenuve's death is quite ridiculous...Villeneuve was in good spirits at Zolder. One can blame the crazy qualifying system at the time, the fragile Ferrari chassis and its unsafe seatbelt sytem, Villenueve's own 'on the edge' style, a lack of concentration...to blame Pironi is pretty heinous

  • As a GV fan I am pretty convinced Gilles wasn't trying when he was in the lead. The lap times back it up: when he was leading they were three seconds per lap slower than when Pironi was. Whether Pironi knew this is another matter. As for Gilles being in a bad mood at Zolder, according to his friend (journalist) Nigel Roebuck the last time he saw him just before that infamous qualifying session he once again seemed relaxed and happy. I'd rather blame the crazy rules than Pironi for GV's death.

  • Killed Gilles trust, his sense of rationality and ultimately his life! F**k you Pironi!

  • Pironi will always be the blame for Gilles death. Had he not done that Gilles would have been in a better state if mind and heck even alive today. What he did is truly unforgivable. Gilles was a honest and loyal man who honoured agreements. In 1979, the same GP he was half a second away from being champion, half a second from being one of the greatest champions, but he was magnanimous and let shcketer win (one of the worst champions) as agreed. For Pironi not to honour the agreement killed Gill

  • Pironi always seemed to come across as a bit cold. But he did drive for my fav team, TYRRELL!

Villeneuve was at times astounding and his death was horrific.

  • Great Commentators, Great Drivers, Great Racing, Great Era!

  • I think all this situation happened between Ferrari and Renault, who had planned those changes in the positions to make the race exciting and try to prevent the FIA from banning the turbocharged engines whick have been very helpful to their cars.

  • Ahhhh Giles... I wish you were here
