http://www.SmellyWasher.com removes the stinky smell from front load washing machines. Smelly Washer also eliminates the embarrassment of moldy smelling clothes, towels, and linens - all while eliminating dangerous molds and allergens that are secretly breeding in your fabrics.
When you're finished washing, keep the lid open. This goes for any washer. Leaving the door open will allow moisture to evaporate. A dry washer will not grow mold. I've owned my HE washer now for two years, there is not a hint of odor.

Maytag? Then a new Whirlpool? Sorry but both are very similar and both made by the same people as Whirlpool owns Maytag. That's like jumping out of the frying pan right into the fire. Maytag is not a quality brand and hasn't been for years. It's like buying a chevy econocar and paying for a luxury car. Next time move up to something decent like LG makes.

Leaving the dispenser drawer open or door ajar will help lessen the odor but it dries out the odor-causing residue and can make it VERY difficult to remove. In short, if your washer smells with the door open or closed it's time to clean it!

I don't have an issue with my washer, I've tried Tide, Man that stuff stinks! I use afresh about every 4 months, otherwise, I am not afraid to use hot on my whites, I use bleach as well. I don't use fabric softener, and liquid detergent.

We've tried them all and Smelly Washer Cleaner is the only one that works!! We have also had great success with Smelly Towel Cleaner.

Years ago I found the smelly washer product online. Back then it came in a ziplock bag and envelope (mail person probably thought it was cocaine ha!) anyway, the product DOES work. The biggest problem is that the big box stores DO NOT properly educate the consumer on how to care for these things. You need to keep the door open. Your old top loader never sealed shut so even with the lid closed you still have airflow. You have to wipe down the boot. There are lots of folds and pockets where moist

Gadgets,
What are you thoughts on powder versus liquid?
I used to hesitate on either because of availability but with less expensive detergents using animal fat or vegetable oil as fillers combined with general use of softened or municipal supplied water and low "soil" content in laundry I really think it's advisable to switch to a powder HE detergent if odor persists or returns.

You're right on the money here, the people who say that these steps do not work, have let the problem too far, and there is now mold growing inside the interior of the drum and seals, it may be very hard to recover from that state. Take care of your washer, it will take care of you.

I sell appliances for a living and none of my customers have EVER complained to me about washer smell.
I tell all my customers:
1: crack the washer door after you are done using it, so that the water can evaporate.
2: use HE detergent, it is thinner and wont leave residue behind.
3: once a month run a 'tub clean' or 'washer clean' cycle with a tablespoon of bleach, and no clothes. (be sure to use an extra rinse if your washer doesn't have a 'tub clean' cycle.

Affresh instructions state to run the washer through 3 separate clean cycles for contaminated machines. In this test only 1 cycle was run.
Here are a few simple guidelines for HE Laundry.
1. Use HE detergent only, and only the amount recommended. Regular non-HE detergent will generate excessive sudsing and leave residues conductive to mold-mildew and bacteria.
2. Always remove wet laundry.
3. Leave the door cracked open when not in use.
4. Clean the machine as instructed in the manual.
