Similar to other comments - this particular act encouraged me to become a professional magician and some of my own acts have been inspired by the Barry Manilow song and of course Copperfields routine! It's hard not to be tempted to copy this act - it's brilliant!

@TheUmpire91 You should be a magician yourself, as you've read my mind and said precisely what I was thinking! (Funny, as I used to be a practicing magician, myself). Hahaha!
This is a wonderful piece I have great memories of. I also didn't remember Ms Bertinelli assisting him & I also had a crush (Then again, who didn't). She's still classy as can be. I so appreciate the difference Manilow, Copperfield, & Bertinelli made in my life. Good times--good times. :O)

This is my most memorable David Copperfield act mostly because of Barry Manilows song backing up the act and gave it more of a meaning to what was going on!Memories can make you happy or make you sad......and when one comes back to touch and hold you and then go away again SO much relates to Manilows song..so THAT is what makes this video so special to me...Thanks for posting this :-)

This is great but I love his newer version much better :) It's much more sensual and the song used fit the act perfectly!

ditto, ditto and ditto. love the song, love the routine, saw it when i was a child on TV, saw it live in Boston at the Wang Center and teared up every time. thanks for posting (wish i could hear the audio better)

I too, was a child of the late 70's, and I always loved the David Copperfield specials. It's funny...the random things that stick with us over the years, but this was one of those things for me. I will always associate this song with this performance. Where are the Burnett and Copperfield entertainers today? Thanks so much for posting!

I saw David perform this very routine live in Ilinois at a university auditorium back about 1985. It was also the first time I ever met him. I was an aspiring young magician back then, and I was thrilled beyond belief to see this classic routine live and meet the man himself afterwards. This is magic/illusion as an art in its finest form, IMHO. To me it is more creative and impressive than his larger stunts or illusions, because of the intense emotional appeal. Thanks for posting this!

"Weekend In New England", is my favorite Barry Manilow song. This magic trick is the reason why. Like many on this board, I first saw this as a young child. I cried then like I teared up just now watching it for the first time in about 30 years. Thank you so much...for posting this!!
I agree... I remember watching this on TV when I was a young child and remember the emotions and I have loved the song ever since. I did not know or did not remember that it was Valerie Bertinelli! Which is kinda funny because I had a big crush on her from "One Day at a Time"!
Thanks so much for posting this. Of course, the most credit should go to Mr. Manilow for creating such a beautiful song, and to Mr. Copperfield and Ms. Bertinelli for their performance - but thanks for posting!
