Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767)
Overture in C (Wassermusik) TWV 55:C3
"Water Music" or "Hamburg Ebb and Flow"

5. Gavotte. The playful Naiades
6. Harlequinade. The joker Triton.
7. The violent Aeolus
8. Menuet. The pleasant Zephyr.
9. Gigue. Ebb and Flow.
10. Canarie. The merry sailors.

Telemann was to also write some Water Music of his own, although meant to be played on the land and not like Handel, on barges. The dance pieces are also descriptive, invoking different deities. In my opinion, they are more imaginative and creative than Handel's. (Not that Handel's were inferior in any way.) Written to celebrate Hamburg's Admiralty's 100th anniversary, the pieces highly reflected Hamburg's tidal waters and very fitting for the occasion.

  • Thank you for the Bremen upload. I think that this is the best version of Wassermusic recorded. BRIAN
