This clip is from my collection. Dated 1914 in San Fransico. 4 years prior to this film, the dance appeared on the Cover of the S.F. call as the Texas Tommy Swing dance.

  • and what happen with the music? :S

  • wonderfull! This is so similar to cuban rueda, the way of dancing salsa...

  • In African tribal dancing the males showed off their dancing skills and adornment skills to the females and she would dance with different ones choosing the one she wanted to be with. Much like how the Peacock male does to the female. The historical connection to ones' root culture still manifests in the arts and music. Creativity is such a subconscious connection to ones' ancestry.

  • Only in the United States do we have such a disdainful attitude toward anything African and that is also from the African American community as well. It is the evidence of and a testimony to the horrendous effects of chattel slavery, and destruction of Indigenous Native Peoples’ culture, to the minds and souls of African and Native American descendants.

  • I watch this while listening to "Too Much Mustard"!

  • I wish I could hear what they're dancing to! This is just incredible. Who knew they were dancing like this back then. I just love it!

  • wow . . . this is incredible footage! I wish I could go back in time to see what else they were doing!

  • Wow -- I want to do the Texas Tommy!!

  • This is fantastic! THANKS!

My friend Tom Brier recorded a GREAT hot ragtime rendition of "Texas Tommy Swing" as track 1 on his first CD "Rising Star" which you can find online. I think you'd need permission to use it, but try emailing Tom and/or Stomp Off Records.
