A maniac breaks into your house to kill you. You call your friend for help, but your friend refuses to come, so you deal with the intruder by yourself and the intruder runs away. This means you have saved yourself with no help from your friend. Later on your friend comes around and together you go after the intruder who ran away, catch him and beat him up. This still doesn't change the fact that your friend did nothing to save you, and the USA did nothing to save Britain.

As a historically accurate aside, strictly speaking the only people who saved Britain in WWII were the British themselves with their navy and airforce. The Americans were too late to really claim that they played a role in "saving" Britain, and to argue otherwise is ignorance. Britain had to save herself in 1940. After the Battle of Britain, which the British won with no help from America, Germany gave up on trying to invade Britian. As for lend-lease, that didn't even start until 1941.

@truthmonsters Well I'm sure you would agree that there were a lot of Commonwealth allies also helping Britain, Canada being a major ally from the outset (first week of the war.) So while I tremendously respect the courage and accomplishments of the British in the Battle of Britain, it was not only the British saving Great Britain.

@andrewbarrett42 If you aren't from either country then I could see how you might not pick up on the diffferences but I assure you there are. For one thing, the American *terror* of anything "socialized" (such as universal healthcare) is a big difference which we Canadians can't understand for the life of us. That's just ONE.
