On the opening night of the US tour, Joanna Newsom performed at Calvin College. After the show, all people were invited to stay for an artist conversation where audience members could ask questions to Joanna Newsom and band mates. The resulting conversation was excellent.

Some of the questions might be unclear, so I transcribed them the best I could.

(0:00) Q4. On your new record, there are some songs like Good Intentions that have an old R&B or soul. Did you guys as a band come to that kind of feeling together. Playing together, getting familiar, this the sound were going in but going to feel that together, or is this something you always wanted to do? The second part with that song specifically, is how did you maintain such honesty in the lyrics. It's a love song, but it still feels fresh and doesn't feel cliche; even though it has very familiar themes and very familiar sounding progressions in the song. As a band, did you feel the directions you're moving in, or did you [Joanna] feel that I want to do this and this is where we want to go?

(4:42) Q5. What are you all listening to?

(7:27) Q6. In my travels, I found a version of Bridges and Balloons that had been overlayed on top of a reggaeton song, what are your thoughts on that?
(quick googling leads to: http://thefmly.com/2009/11/02/tune-of-the-night-41/ )

(8:03) Q7. With more and more popular artists nowadays doing film scores, would that be something you'd be interested in or have thought about doing?

  • She likes Dirty Projectors. Wow. Dirty Projectors and Joanna Newsom are some of my favorite (new) artists. I would like to meet her. She seems like a cool person. I appreciate how she can still maintain a down to earth mindset and behavior. I also appreciate her music. It's terrific. haha.

  • He is listening to Hella and nobody applauses. What a shame! Good Interview though.
