It would excel in a urban/street fighting environment,ie able to drop rounds between structures, etc its not practical to train in such a place so they are training in open country here. a little known and interesting mortar is the 90mm chemical mortar US Army WW2. It was a rifled mortar. I grew up with the former 1st Sgt of the Red Dragons as a mentor. One of the most unique storys of WW2. American artillery was piss poor in the early stages and the chem mortars took up the slack.

what advantages does a large mortar have over a self propelled gun or a howitzer? i always thought mortars had a shorter range than guns.

Заканчивай смотреть зомбоящик и играть в тупые игры. Включай мозги, читай много книг по нужной тематике и анализирую всё происходящее вокруг. Колесо тоже давно изобрели, но это не значит, что в 22 веке ему найдётся замена.

It is not very useful in modern warfare between superpowers, it is just too slow to deploy. however, in an anti-artisan warfare scenario, it could be a big helper. Instant availability for the ground force, and surely much cheaper and faster than calling air support. The only problem is its loading system, it is just decades behind.New hydraulic system may help. 240mm projectile is as powerful as a smart bomb. almost as accurate as a smart bomb and probably quite cheaper than one.
