  • You are right George wrote the song but I read George Jones book I lived to Tell it all and on page 60 he tells of him and Stonewall touring with Ernest Tubb and they played some sort of prison in Texas somewhere when Sonewall ask an inmate how much time he had and the inmate told him he had eighteen years but still had life to go. Now George was inspired by that and released the song in 1958. I had my facts wrong but this is right out of George's mouth.

  • Good knowledge. Thanks for that info and your comments, appreciated.

  • Actually my father, James Monroe grainger, helped his cousin, Stonewall JAckson, write most of his music. My dad and my uncle, Larry, Wrote a couple of his songs. Get the facts straight.Old Stonewall Jackson took the credit and started his career without the song writers.

  • Well George Jones definately wrote this one so your comment is rather meaningless on this video.

  • Not bad, not at all !

  • Stonewall released it first in 1959 it was his first hit in 1959.George released later on the album of other people's hits

  • Sorry but Stonewall didnt have anything to do with it.George wrote after playing at the Old Time Fiddlers Convention in Crockett ,Texas. There was a few prisoners there on the show one was and old man George ask him what was he in for he said murder George ask how long have u been in he said 18 years and George ask him well when do get out he said I dont I still got life to go.George wrote it with Johnny Cash in mind but Johnny didnt want it so Stonewall persuaded George to let him have it.

  • sorry

  • Stonewall and George Jones wrote this song after getting the hell beat out of them in Hobbs NM.
