@MrDannees I cock the hammer to keep it from dragging on the back of the bolt carrier but you can seperate the upper and lower with the hammer at rest. HTH

@onmilo Do you need to have the hammer cocked to separate upper from lower or is it safe to just leave the hammer up?

@pureballa2014 Thank you for watching & glad you found it helpful.
I have gone to a heavier duty wrench since making this vid but for the one time project doer, the wrench shown will get the job done & costs only about six bucks! :-)

Is there away I could do this without a vice grip? would you have any suggestions?

@TheLearning50 Not one I would suggest. Without the vice & support there is a real possibility you could crack the rear extension ring on the receiver

@onmilo Or I could do what you did with the torch and a pair of vice grip wrench and heat it real good then place the vice grips real tight on the castle nut and then work it loose that way. should work without the vice grips?

@TheLearning50 Like I said, not something I would recommend, lower receivers are cheap enough if you break one but do you really want to risk it, or even worse, put a big gouge on the receiver.

The buffer on my DPMS was pinned and Locktited in place. Your video was a lifesaver. I disn't have a torch so I put a hairdryer on high and left it on the castle nut for about 10 minutes, it made a world of difference. It was on there so tight that I chipped a tooth on the cheap stock tool I got from Brownells.

@heraldthemighty I hear ya.
I used an inexpensive RRA tool in the vid to show it can be done & know these tools are not built for heavy duty repeated use.
