Contra Dancing in Greenfield

Saturday August, 9 2008. The one and only time we have danced at Greenfield Mass at the Guiding Star Grange. A great driving band TIDAL WAVE playing their Quebecois music. I do love a diatonic accordion out front most of the night. A beautiful paced evening of fairly complex dances called by Rachel Nevitt. She was always pleasant, graceful and informative. I particularly liked "Jack's in the Kitchen" I think it was called. There was also the always interesting "Indecent Dance" which was enjoyably backward. Regulars to the dance, Adam, Pat, Charley, and Roseanne were informative and enjoyable to talk to. I didn't catch the name of the dance recorded here.

Thank you. That does sound familiar now that you said it.. I do think Rachel mentioned the 'sun dance' 'moon dance' phrases. I really do try to keep up with the titles and choreographers. I guess I was disappointed that I had to sit one out that I didn't catch it.

Contra dancing is often called, the most fun you can have with your clothes on. The indecent refers not to and without your clothes on either, but to the dance formation of the contra - proper, improper, and indecent, which is simply the reverse of improper - instead of the actives crossed over, the inactives are crossed. There is only one other combination possible (plus Becket, etc.), everyone crossed over, but that would be too boring, but don't put contra dance callers up to not using it.
