NRECA International Staff Myk Manon is interviewed on CNN Espanol about the relief efforts NRECA International assisted in immediately following the devesting earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2010.
Restoring Power -- NRECA International Division assisted Electricité d'Haiti (EdH) — Haiti's nationally owned utility — in providing emergency power to hospitals, health centers, government offices, and refugee camps. Within three months of the earthquake, power was restored to 35% of the Port-au-Prince grid.
Assessing Damage -- NRECA International was the first electricity sector response team to arrive on-scene to conduct inspection and assessment of the damage done by the earthquake to the electrical system in the affected areas of Haiti.
Building partnerships -- NRECA's 1,000 members — including distribution cooperatives, power suppliers, statewide associations, and rural utility financing institutions — to date have provided us with over $225,000 in cash and equipment donations as well as sending volunteers to help us with the efforts in Haiti.
