The Prix Ars Electronica, the Ars Electronica Festival, the Ars Electronica Center Museum of the Future and the Ars Electronica Futurelab are the four divisions that comprise the Ars Electronica.
Ars Electronica has been accompanying the Digital Revolution for 30 years now, and its vitality remains undiminished. Ars Electronicas uniqueness and the outstanding position it has assumed within the context of international media culture have resulted above all from the constellation of its elements and the areas in which it has focused its energies. Ars Electronica has undergone continual development throughout its history, so that today, more than any other comparable institution, it represents a comprehensive approach to the encounter with techno-cultural phenomena. In pursuing this mission, its radius of activities ranges from providing a setting for philosophical- theoretical discussions involving top international experts to actively fostering media art projects and collaborating on joint ventures with private sector associates. And, through the Museum of the Future, Ars Electronica reaches interested audiences in all age groups and social strata. Ars Electronica has also become a significant source of inspiration in the process of cultural and economic change that has been underway in this city. With the new building of the Ars Electronica Center the city of Linz gets an additional symbol of its cultural engagement.
As a result, Linz has come to epitomize the model municipality whose orientation on the future is not just a question of commerce and industry, but rather one that is envisioned primarily as a cultural of artistic work and also serves as a prototype for urban renewal and cultural policy development options that go beyond traditionalism and tourism. Its history is impressive proof that Ars Electronica has never sealed itself off in an ivory tower. Its interdisciplinarity, its openness to new trends and its confrontation with visions of future developments have in the final analysis always had one essential focus: their impact on our society. Thus, in spite of all the techno-imagery and machinery, the human being ultimately occupies the center of attention in this encounter—the human being as artist, worker, manager and consumer, the human being as beneficiary, user, victim and, above all, creator and applier of new technologies.
It is the nature of Ars Electronica to pursue an ongoing quest for innovation. In its confrontation with art, technology and society, Ars Electronicas thematic leadership has proven to be a steadfast and constitutive element of its activities. Since 1979, it has tirelessly opened up new and uncharted territory of experimental, technical and social innovation. In this way, Ars Electronica has continually expanded its action radius and successfully assumed the role of social bell-wether. The Prix Ars Electronica founded in 1987 has become a network linking artists throughout the entire world and fulfills the function of scout discovering the latest trends in art and technology. It is thus a key instrument in the long continuity of Ars Electronicas thematic leadership. Since 1996, the Ars Electronica Futurelab as gateway to the worlds of business and science as well as the Museum of the Future functioning as mediator in the general publics encounter with In going about this, attention is never focused exclusively on art, on technology or on society; instead, the effort is always made to reveal the multi-layered shifts and reciprocities taking place among them. Ars Electronica has been living out this curiosity for three decades now. An inquisitiveness that is always manifesting itself in unexpected and refreshing new ways—as speculative designs for the future, as philosophical debates and analytical scrutiny of the latest developments. At all times, though, Ars Electronica conceives this artistic-scientific search for traces of emergent reality as work with and in the public sphere. The debut of the new Ars Electronica Center opens the next chapter of this success story. But with all the innovations in structure and content, the basic orientation remains unchanged. The focus is on the issues of critical significance to our society.the state of the art have been successfully carrying out additional, highly essential tasks.
Today, Ars Electronica stands upon a foundation supported by four solid pillars that optimally complement each other both functionally and with respect to content. Its comprehensive approach and singular status, the benefits yielded by the synergies of its interactive components and its manifold linkages to international networks assure Ars Electronica a prominent position in the ever-growing domain of media culture over the next 30 years as well.
