Downtown east is the older side of the city. The St. Lawrence Market District is cut out of the Downtown East District starting at Queen Street and running right down to the Gardner Expressway and running from Sherbourne to Yonge Street. There has been quite a trend to the east side in recent years with lots of warehouses being converted to lofts. Loft-style condos (new construction) are plentiful with developments like MoZo coming on stream. Recently there has been some condos introduced to the area (not loft style) in buildings like The Richmond by Tridel.
There still is a stong presence of old Toronto and a higher element of crime. Radio City, a two tower new development stands above the old CBC buildings on Jarivs. There's lots happening in the King St. and Parliament area (lots of lofts) but again, it depends on your appreciation of the old city and accompanying street activity. On it's north perameter you find St. Jamestown a high density low income multi-building rental project. My personal recommendations are to keep south of Queen St. clear across to River St. and you're alright. No hesitation about the St. Lawrence Market District which really is in what we are calling the Downtown East District on simplycondos.com.
Overall some pretty affordable housing principally based on loft living.
