A tour of my school, where I spend 90% of my working time, and a quick glance at the students. From what I can tell my school building and students are pretty typical for this part of Japan (correct me if I'm wrong!)

  • great vid. I have a question. The other staff members, are they pretty friendly or do they pretty much mind their own business?

  • yes to both. I'm discovering that any question about Japan quickly elicits the fact that this is the Land of Contradictions. So, in typical Japanese fashion my colleagues pretty much keep to themselves. In America I think the standard for being a caring person is "taking trouble for others", while in Japan the same courtesy is extended by "not making trouble for others." That said, when there is a reason or necessity to engage me then they are almost over-the-top friendly and accommodating.

  • Beautiful music. The cultural festival looks like it will be a wonderful time.

It looks like you are known by your camera. Was the music as loud and inter mingled in real life as it sounds on the clip? I see you have the total obedience of your students.

And a big hello back to all your students!

  • ha! Obedience is not in their vocabulary.. in every sense!! Yes, they are very familiar with my camera. I've wanted to take some clips in class, but there's no way it wouldn't disrupt everything. I was asked to document the culture festival like the sports festival, so I should have an edited film of that soon. Going to Tokyo in 10 days!

  • are there any haafu's in your school? I'm half japanese half english and thinking about joining the 3rd year of junior high school in japan and don't know how people will react towards me!! Do you know if students have to take exams to enter JHS in Japan?

  • Oh - forgot to add, that my guess is they switch rooms to practice with a live piano, as opposed to the CD player they most likely use in their regular classrooms.

  • Bunka sai is a great event. I'm sure you'll really enjoy it!
