Special Report: Strong quake jolts SW China

The latest quake death toll confirmed by the State Council is just under 32,500, while the number of injured has reached over 220,000.

In Sichuan alone, 31,978 people have been killed, with 209,905 others injured.

On Sunday morning, an aftershock measuring 6 on the Richter scale jolted Jiangyou City in northern Sichuan, causing cracks in the mountain and seriously damaging the city's roads.

The Ministry of Health says so far there have been no outbreaks of epidemics or public health incidents in the quake zone. And rescuers are still looking for survivors.
Officials say by 4 p.m. on Sunday, a total of 36,563 people have been rescued, and over 4 and a half million victims have been relocated. 37 thousand medical workers engaged in rescue efforts have treated 162 thousand people. 281 rescuers from Hong Kong and Taiwan, as well as Russia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, are in Sichuan to help with the disaster relief work.

Meanwhile, the National Meteorological Center says rain and even thunderstorms are likely to sweep through several quake-hit areas next week, which is expected to make relief work more difficult.
