This video examines the development of the relationship between mentor and student-teacher with the focus on science teaching.

It shows how one teacher mentor introduces a student to the school resources and supports her to develop medium term plans for a topic on Materials. It then shows the planning, observation and debriefing of a lesson on melting. The video picks out points of good practice, including how the mentor helps the student consider organisation and issues of safety; assists her to expand her subject knowledge; handle childrens misconceptions; and improve her scientific discussion with children.

The scenarios are role-played by two teachers and represent examples of good practice gleaned from observing many mentors with their students. Each scenario gives pointers to help other mentors act as supporters, trainers and educators in a way that develops their students science teaching.

Introduction

The student is shown: How science is organised in the class. What science topic will be studied. What resources are available. The childrens previous science experience. How science is assessed and recorded.

Developing medium term plans that: Satisfy the National Curriculum. Identify skills, knowledge and understanding. Develop these clearly and progressively. Include finding out the childrens ideas at the beginning. Plan assessment throughout. Have realistic, interesting and relevant activities.

Planning the lesson that considers: Science learning outcomes. Students own knowledge. Use of science language. Ways of questioning children. How to deal with childrens misconceptions. Organisation and use of resources and equipment. Safety.

Reviewing the lesson

The student should think about: If the learning objectives were achieved. How the lesson could be improved. How the childrens learning will be recorded. What the children should be learning next. What teaching skills & knowledge should be focused on next (an action plan)
