Montreux (390 m ü. M.) liegt auf dem in den Genfersee hinausragenden Schwemmkegel des Wildbachs Baye de Montreux am Fuss der Waadtländer Alpen. Dank seines milden Klimas und seiner Lage an einer geschützten Bucht gilt Montreux als Zentrum der Waadtländer Riviera. Die Vegetation mit Pinien, Zypressen und Palmen ist stark mediterran geprägt. Die ehemaligen Dörfer haben sich seit dem Ende des 19. Jh. mit den Siedlungsgebieten von La Tour-de-Peilz, Blonay und Veytaux verschmolzen. Entlang der attraktiven Uferpromenade befinden sich viele Häuser und Hotels aus der Blütezeit der Belle Epoque (u. a. das Fairmont Le Montreux Palace von 1905) sowie Kongresszentrum und Casino (dessen Brand von 1971 inspirierte Deep Purple zum Welthit «Smoke on the Water»). Sehenswert ist auch das Schloss Chillon. Es liegt auf einer ufernahen Felseninsel und ist heute ein Museum. Seit 1967 findet jährlich das weltweit bekannte Montreux Jazz Festival statt.

Eine Zahnradbahn führt von Montreux auf die Rochers-de-Naye auf 2'042 m ü. M. -- einen der schönsten Aussichtsberge der Westschweiz. Hier geniessen die Besucher ein traumhaftes Alpenpanorama auf die Savoyer, Waadtländer, Walliser und Berner Alpen.

Viele Persönlichkeiten von Weltruf (u. a. Charlie Chaplin, Freddie Mercury, Kaiserin Elisabeth von Österreich, Pjotr Iljitsch Tschaikowski, Leo Tolstoi, Vladimir Nabokov) haben Zeit in Montreux verbracht.


Montreux (390 m above sea level) is located on an alluvial fan of the Baye de Montreux mountain torrent which reaches into Lake Geneva, at the foot of the Vaud Alps. Thanks to its mild climate and its location in a sheltered bay, Montreux is regarded as the center of the Vaud Riviera. The vegetation is strongly Mediterranean, with stone pines, cypresses, and palm trees. Since the end of the 19th century, the former villages have merged with the settlement areas of La Tour-de-Peilz, Blonay, and Veytaux. The attractive lakeside promenade is lined with many houses and hotels from the height of the Belle Époque (among others the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace from 1905) as well as the conference center and the casino (the fire of 1971 was the inspiration for Deep Purple's worldwide hit «Smoke On The Water»). The Chillon castle is also well worth a visit. It is located on a rocky island close to the shore and is now a museum. The Montreux Jazz Festival, known worldwide, has been taking place here annually since 1967.

A cogwheel railroad runs from Montreux to the Rochers-de-Naye at 2,042 m above sea level -- one of the most beautiful panorama mountains of Western Switzerland. Visitors can enjoy a gorgeous alpine panorama of the Savoy, Vaud, Valais, and Bernese Alps.

Many people of worldwide reputation spent time in Montreux (among others, Charlie Chaplin, Freddie Mercury, Empress Elisabeth of Austria, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Leo Tolstoy, and Vladimir Nabokov).
