The second airport I visited on December 19, 2009 was Windham in Willimantic, CT. I had never landed there before, so this was another first approach for me. The traffic pattern was very busy so I circled a few miles away until things seemed to settle, and then I set-up for the 45 to runway 36. That's where this video starts. It has gotten a bit bumpy by this time, which you will see and hear in the video. Runway 36 is the shorter of the two runways and I had been hoping the winds would be light enough for them to be using the longer runway 9. But they weren't and so I joined the pattern for 36. You will hear a King Air call for runway 9. He landed after I cleared the active, and I had to wait for his landing for my taxi-back. Anyway, it was gusty and so I carried a little extra airspeed on final, but the runway was short so as a result, the landing was a little flat and fast resulting in some nose wheel bounce. Got the plane stopped in plenty of time, and didn't waste any runway, but as I watch this video now, I keep wanting to pull power a few seconds earlier. I think the gusts got to me a bit. Anyway, not perfect but a fun airport to visit and looking at the video, a great learning experience. As with the Southbridge video shot on the same flight, two HD cams and Unicom audio. Obviously the heat was still out on this leg of the flight, which again explains the coat and cool "flying" gloves. Enjoy.

  • Hey Rick, want to be honest with you, love your videos, but I think you are lucky that nose gear is as strong as it is :P After the second bounce of the wheel I would have been outta there :)

  • @TheMeslava LOL You should have seen my actual bounces where I did go around! :)

  • What a beautiful airplane you have there. Maybe when I'm old enough I'll take that up instead of my hang gliding.. Nothing better than bein' in the air.

  • @clamb147 It's fun. This plane is a rental, and it is very nice to fly. Cool that you do hang gliding.

  • very quiet and smooth plane

  • @nighthawk0077 It is a nice plane. It's a rental.

  • @rdfelty I'd love the see one :) Maybe if you ever do catch a go around on a flight, it would make a video. I have only had to go around once so far in my solo training, and it was a pretty interesting experience. I had 40 degrees of flaps in, and carb heat on, I put in the power then brought the carb heat out, I was still WAY too slow because of how slow I was with the flaps that I had to force it down to about 10 feet to prevent stalling. I got the thing cleaned up and climbed. Learning Exp :P

  • @rdfelty This was a 1983 Cessna 172N model I think... I don't know, whatever one had the 40 degrees. Since I didn't have enough room in my last comment, it's always neat to see the circumstances leading up to someones decision to go around. I really think that would be a good video for people to learn from. I wish I caught mine on video :)

  • @davydood88 Just visual. Haven't pushed hard enough on training for the IFR yet.

  • Are you instrument rated? Or just visual?
