In 2003, I choreographed a Southern Appalachian percussive dance routine for the dance ensemble Dueling Shoes based on the song Black Annie as played in the unique style of Mr. Joe Thompson of Mebane, NC. Today, Joe Thompson, now widely celebrated, remains the oldest living and still performing African American old time fiddle player in North Carolina. The dance steps were created in his honor to simulate and compliment his rhythmic approach to this tune. This original Akonting piece contains both the drum and percussive dance rhythms in that routine. Contact stevelevitt@earthlink.net or www.duelingshoes.com
