I can't believe that no one he told about it even suggested that he should go to a doctor for better advice! It's sad that just because people weren't well-informed enough about rabies that he had to die from it.

Even at less than 1 in 10, there are BILLIONS of bats. Millions may roost in a single cave. If it's in your room, get prophylactic rabies treatment! Rest in peace, Zach.

@soawsomestuff When I had that problem after my dog tangled with one at high noon (raccoons are nocturnal), I grabbed my .22 and put the 'coon down (and I'm a vegetarian, not a redneck). Rabies positive. Animal control is, sadly, the first place municipalities cut budgets.
PS- Dog immunized/boosted & is fine

As a kid, I was home sick and woke up, to a bat flying in my room. We never figured out how it got in. I called out to my Mom. "There's a bat in my room!" She thought I was hallucinating :) The most satisfying thing was JUST as she entered the room, it flew in front of her face and she screamed!

its hard in the u.s. because where i live raccons everywhere. one time i woke up and took my 3 pound chihuahua out and there it was a racoon that was drooling, and walking with no sence of balence. dident even c me. dident even hear my dog barking. and the worst part is that i called animal controle and they never came out. so he most likey got other animals infected.

Did anyone else notice the ghost cart was emitting a loud pitched buzzing sound?
1 in 10...I had no idea the odds were that high.
Im am, however, sorry for the loss of your friend.

@Straight8S The 1 in 10 is controversial. Some in the Public Health Departments say it's much lower - like .1%, but then there are some Vets who say that it's much higher than 1 in 10. All in all, you just have to know that if you come in contact with a wild animal and are bitten - get medical help immediately. And, if you wake up and there's a bat, assume you've been bit.

@rabiesaware But how did this Zach guy got infected, without bitings?
Dit he got saliver in his eyes and/or mouth??
Skoda130 11 months ago
@Skoda130 His parents are not sure what happened. Usually there is a bite to become infected, but Zach nor his parents could find one.

@rabiesaware A bat's teeth are so small and sharp that he could certainly have been bitten and not felt it. Sounds strange but it's very true.
Doromir 10 months ago
@Doromir Yeah it does sound strange, but there are some kinds of bats where it's true. If you want to learn more about bats - google "bat conservation." They really are incredible creatures.
