Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein appear on the Today to promote their new book Your Best Birth. the book focuses on empowering women with information so they can make informed decisions regarding their childbirth options.
But I agree that the movie is promoting homebirth-which I personally support too. =) But she has always said it's about choice and promoting choice for birth and not being made to feel that their is only one type of birth to have-AKA hospital birth. She obviously wants people to just understand the cons of going into the hospital but if that's what they still choose or MUST choose-like her friend sitting next to her-then naturally she wouldn't want to insult them either.
But at the same time she doesn't want to judge women who do choose hospital birth. Her whole point is to get informed, and if you still decide on hospital birth afterwards then at least you are doing so knowing the facts and feeling that it's best for you, while she is also saying that women should be educated about Homebirth/Center birth to rid themselves of the fears that are all based off uneducated fear-based assumptions.I think she is trying to be balanced and not make women feel like outcast
I'm kind of disappointed that Ricki seems to be back-pedaling by saying she's not promoting home-birth. The film was very clear about the risk of hospital birth versus home-birth, which is great information. That is promotion, by default, and I wish Ricki would stand by it!
