The words were actually spoken by McCay when he presented this in vaudeville so that Gertie appeared to be obeying his commands. When he walked behind the screen it looked like he stepped onto it at the end. People really thought it was magic--they'd never seen cartoons before.

uh, cartoon network could have just aired it, doesn't mean they made it or were around when they made it. they show Bugs Bunny and they weren't around in the 50's
