Fact: They used about 10,000 papers for this.

People had different "storytelling priorities" back then. Nickelodeons were popular in the early 20th century, and those films were always short, and featured spectacularly unremarkable subject matter, like a guy sneezing. Gertie lifting her paws and nodding her head was still plenty to dazzle the folks of that era. With all due respect, 1914 doesn't give a crap that you preferred "Jurassic Park" (a film that came out 80 years later), because Gertie was theirs, and at the time, she was enough.

I love this for being pretty amazing in its time, but my sciencey self can only focus on the fact Gertie is completely biologically incorrect.
