1st tip to increase your mac speed, install MORE RAM.
More ram instead of better ram isn't going to make any computer any faster (unless in very memory hungry applications which for a lot of people are none and for some people are 1 or 2 at best)
Yes it's a common practice but that doesn't make it right, if it was a common practice for people to bash their heads into a cinderblock wall claiming that it would give them eternal life i guess you wouldn't do it or recommend it.
