New instructional materials for elementary reading and language arts and English as a Second Language are scheduled to arrive in Texas classrooms in Fall 2010 and 2011, now that the SBOE has approved long-awaited revisions to the state's standards, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills.
The process of revising the ELAR TEKS began in 2005 and has involved hundreds of hours of work by teachers, state and national experts, and the TEA and SBOE. Three public hearings, in February, March, and May, were held for public input, and written comments were reviewed as well. That work culminated in a vote May 23 to approve the new standards.
