  • Theravadan Buddhism is considered to be one of the earliest forms of Buddhism practiced by the followers of the Buddha.

The Buddha taught that to focus on a creator God was to bring distraction into ones life. You can show kindness and compassion to others in your present faith...but, to try and practice the fundamental teaching of "detachment" in Buddhism and still try to hold onto ones belief and attachment in a creator God is a huge conflict.

  • Mahayan buddhism is essentially nothing of buddhism itself. To believe that the buddha was a god of any sort and worship and pray to him would surely disappoint the buddha himself. Why worship him? Why believe he was a god with powers beyond human comprehension? There is no need.

  • All Buddhists wish to benefit all beings, regardless of Mahayana, Theravada, Vajrayana training. Personally I think that all types of meditation have benefit: compassion brings joy and goodwill, anapanasati brings superior attention and mindfulness.

  • Mahayana is not real Buddhism, but exotic forms of Brahmanism masquerading as Buddhism. Nothing more, nothing less.

  • Mahayan promotes miracle in spiritual which is only a part from buddhism. However, Theravada is more strict to the core of buddhisms.

  • No adherent to any Buddhist sect should be calling anyone else's beliefs "not true" or "imaginary". What is the point? Ego, dualism, judgmentalism. Do what works for you and stop thinking about everyone else's choices and beliefs. And this nonsense about housholder's near inability to become enlightened?! Really? Because of few examples in the Pali canon? How do you know who is enlightened and who is not? Your pesky next door neighbor may a a fully realized Buddha for all you know.

  • Theravada really Buddhism. Mahayana not true..

  • @20callenderslady Very true. In the Thai forest traditions, some have real skeleton in their temple's to perpetuate this.

  • @nowaynohow26 Yes a lay person can achieve enlightment however you have to put the effort in to do so. This includes following the dhamma as a way of life and studying the suttas for guidance. Your question requires a very complex answer which I cannot give here. But in brief the answer is yes.
