NITTAIJI indicates NI (Japan) TAI (Thailand) JI (Temple) and named so in 1904 due to the contribution of part of the true ashes of Buddha Sakyamuni (the founder of Buddhism) to Japan from then Thai (Siamese at that time) King Chulalongkorn who was a grandfather of the present Thai King. Nagoya which is located in the middle of the country was chosen a site of new temple to keep the Buddha's ashes. The golden statue of Buddha you see here is a Thai style which is rare in Japan. That was also presented by the Siamese King.
