Depression appears to increase the risk for heart disease, but the mechanism is murky. This is a follow-up study of twins, which allows researchers to separate out genetics and influences from the environment or behavior.
Dr. Viola Vaccarino of Emory University discusses a new grant of nearly $800,000 from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (part of the National Institutes of Health) that will further research into this area. The grant comes is funded by the federal Recovery Act.
