Whilst I don't believe in coincidences, the numbering of Major roads in UK follow the points (not exactly but roughly) of the compass. So North is M/A1, East is M/A2, South is M/A3, West is M/A4. As a road is NE in origin, it is given the title A11,12 or 13 depending on it's relation to N and E. It's not an exact science but it works in navigation so you if know the number of a road, you can work out it's orientation since London is the centre of the compass. It was the ancient Mesopotamians (Babylonians) that first started writing. The letter A (alif which means Ox) was devised to represent the Ox. Turn it upside down and you will see the head of the Ox with 2 horns. Later, Greek and other Europeans turned it upside down to form the letter "A" that we have today.
