Sustainable Kitchen Remodel

My Wife and I have recently acquired a small piece of land in the small community of Victor in Teton Valley, Idaho. This small piece of land has an old farm house that we are hoping to remodel and make into a sustainable earth friendly dwelling. The house looks to have last been remodeled in the mid 70s and built sometime in the mid to late 30s. Along with the house there are a hand full of out buildings and old barn foundations which we will use to salvage unique old wood, doors, concrete pavers, roofing material, and fixtures. The landscape has not been well maintained and is due for a serious overhaul. There is a token raspberry patch similar to a lot of old properties in the area. There will be numerous contests we will create for the secondproject.org community to offer ideas and get paid to help us rebuild a sustainable home.

The Kitchen will need a significant amount of remodeling including all new appliances and light fixtures. The floor will need to be ripped down to the ply wood and redone from scratch. The cabinetry remains in great shape and will be left as is. The kitchen sink is a fantastic old cast iron double sink and will be left as is. The countertops and the backsplash will need to be redone. We will be looking for ideas on great recycled, refurbished, eco-friendly surfaces that work well for a young family in a small kitchen.
