Here is my newly pickep up '98 Jetta TDI 5spd with 297,000. Just replaced the crankshaft timing gear/pulley, timing belt, and tensioner. I also replaced the 8 cam followers, d. side transaxle shaft, parking brake cables, and glowplug harness.
How much did the crankshaft and followers cost to replace? What kind of oil are you using at present? My 1997 Jetta 1.9L TDI with 90 hp requires synthetic oil.
How reliable are these? I know the MB are bullet proof, but very expensive to fix. Are th VW's as expensive to fix? How often do they break? I have been looking to buy one, but i dont know anything about diesel engines. I had a Toyota with a 22r that died at 500K so i was looking for one of those, but they are either rotten, or to expensive. I just want to drive to and from a trainstation... Do the diesels still start in the cold? I have heard issues with that. Any help would be great.
@TheManInDboX I have a 1998 jetta tdi with 230,000 miles on it never had to replace anything 50 miles to the gallon.
Except the timing belt it didnt break i just re did it cause you wanna every 175 thousand miles.
