Here is my newly pickep up '98 Jetta TDI 5spd with 297,000. Just replaced the crankshaft timing gear/pulley, timing belt, and tensioner. I also replaced the 8 cam followers, d. side transaxle shaft, parking brake cables, and glowplug harness.

  • How much did the crankshaft and followers cost to replace? What kind of oil are you using at present? My 1997 Jetta 1.9L TDI with 90 hp requires synthetic oil.

  • When are you gonna review the other Jetta?

  • How reliable are these? I know the MB are bullet proof, but very expensive to fix. Are th VW's as expensive to fix? How often do they break? I have been looking to buy one, but i dont know anything about diesel engines. I had a Toyota with a 22r that died at 500K so i was looking for one of those, but they are either rotten, or to expensive. I just want to drive to and from a trainstation... Do the diesels still start in the cold? I have heard issues with that. Any help would be great.
