Mike San Miguel is featured in this video near the end, following the tribute to Luke Cole. "Mike San Miguel... they named and island after him," we joked. 5 weeks later Mike was gone. --- (Santa Barbara) Guests flew in from as far away as New Jersey and Delaware FOR the June 12, 2010 Cook's Petrel chase aboard the FAST Condor Express from Santa Barbara. We covered a whopping 247 miles heading out to the edge of the continental shelf, then south to just east of the San Juan Seamount and back to Santa Barbara -- a 14 hour trip!
The highlights were spectacular views of 237 Cook's, with many seen on the water, and one large swirling flock of over 50, as well as smashing looks at hundreds of Leach's Storm-petrels, including one summer-breeding Guadalupe susbspecies that is a good candidate for eventual splitting. Black and Ashy storm-petrels, a few late Sabine's Gulls and Arctic Terns, Black-footed Albatross, Sooty and Pink-footed Shearwaters, as well as Red Phalaropes were some of the other highlights.
237 Cook's Petrels in one day breaks the one day Cook's Petrel record of 173 set just a few weeks ago aboard Grande from San Diego. That broke Debi Shearwater's Monterey record of 138 from July of 2009. Entire trip report at www.SoCalBirding.com
