Watch Karen Bates of Apple Farm, Mendocino County, CA, share her grandmother's recipe on how to cook a turkey in the oven. Karen also shares tips on how to choose the right sized turkey for a delicious Thanksgiving dinner, how to stuff a turkey, and how long to cook a turkey.

To begin the turkey recipe, first remove the giblets from the bird. Place orange wedges and onions inside the turkey cavity. Also add oregano, salt, pepper, and butter in the cavity. Secure the neck flap with skewers. Turn the bird over and stuff the bigger cavity with butter, onions, oregano, and orange.

Place the turkey on an adjustable rack. Pull out some fresh oregano and chop it. Mix it with butter, salt, and pepper. Rub this on the outside surface of the bird. Place it in the oven and let it cook. Monitor it to prevent burning. Next, create a stock from the neck, giblets, and onions. The stock in the turkey recipe prevents burning. Baste the bird again. Check and repeat if necessary. With these simple steps on how to cook a turkey, your delicious Thanksgiving dinner is ready!

  • Mmmm I'll stuff that bird

  • looks sooooooooooooo goood :)

  • Thank you for the recipe!

  • @Roxas0987654321 Roxas, I feed 15 comfortably every holiday with a 20-22 pound bird. (We also have side dishes, which impacts how much of the main course people tend to eat.) I'm a big man and comfortable handling a large bird. For 20 people I think a 26-28 pound bird would do the job, but two 14-15 pounders would be a lot easier to manage.

  • Great info..Thanks!!

  • Thanks for sharing your recipe. I'm going to give it a try today.
