I see this is an old post - if you still need the advice? - do two types of practice. 1. practice hitting/kicking a board at one quarter speed - it will toughen up your hands and feet and it will let you know if you are hitting it corectly and 2. practice your kicks and punches on a pad and practice blasting through the target. The combination is fantastic - give it a try - happy training!

you should be allowed to break wooden board in your school. The plastic ones are bullshit. A 12 by 12 by 1 inch board can be very soft and or very hard even when made of pine. You have to learn to feel your board and know its density and its weak point. You can only gain this skill by breaking many many boards.

your hus is too lucky to have you. I is filipino too. :P

Nice little intimate video. I'm a female martial artist too. You sould British, but I haven't looked at your profile yet. When you pass your board-breaking test, which I'm sure you'll accomplish soon, join me and thousands of others who play judo. You're on the verge of conquering one world ... seek out and conquer another.

Ok, well being nervous does suck, I know I have gone through many test because I have my black belt. So, to break a board... for one listen to your instructor like you did, until you are going to break.. he should shut up while you are lining up to break, if he doesn't then ignore him!
1) Breathe out when you hit
2) Try to hit what is beyond the board, think about hitting your instructor in the stomach/chest/wherever he is holding it
I have more, outa space lol
where was I..
oh
3) You were confident about breaking the board, while that is good it can override the though of breaking the board. If you are thinking "Oh I can break this easy" you may not even realize it but you will hit the board softer... think about hitting the board as hard as you can no matter what! I can break bricks, but when I break a single board I still hit it as hard as I can!

Yeah xray paper is actually a great trainning tool - I went to a class in the states that used it ALOT. To me, I think the problem is when we over conceptualize these things and try to "think" our way through. I've failed a few breaks before but it always happens when I'm thinking about it too much. I know it's an usual suggestion, but meditation can often help you at being mindful and less paniky. If your turning kick is for power not sparring really get your hips into it, rotate your whole body
